NM News

This website is a collaboration of the Institute of Public Law and the New Mexico DOT Traffic Safety Bureau, working together to develop programs, research legal issues in transportation safety, and assist New Mexico communities in developing programs to reduce DWI.

The Institute writes and publishes newsletters and other materials on transportation safety, aviation and driver education. The Institute is a division of the University of New Mexico School of Law. The Traffic Safety Bureau is organized under the New Mexico DOT.

July Events:

Driver Education Instructor Certification
Two Options--Choose One:
July 12-16, Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. (each day)
July 19-23, Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. (each day)
Cost: $450

This 40-hour course provides instruction strategies for teaching Driver Education in the classroom and behind the wheel. It is mandatory for anyone who wants to teach Driver Education in private Driver Education schools or in the public schools. College credit is available.

Instructors currently teaching Classroom Curriculum or Behind the Wheel on a training waiver are required to take this class. Current waivers will expire 10 days after the last day of the class.

August Events:

Teaching Techniques
August 6, Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
Cost: $25

This class will help prepare new teachers to create effective classroom environments, presentations, and teaching plans. It is mandatory for the following instructors (who have not already taken the class):

  • Driver Education Instructors who do not have a teaching license (see Rule 18.20.3.18F)
  • Driving Safety Instructors (see Rule 18.20.8.16F; this may be waived with documentation of a teaching certificate)

All instructors, including DWI School Facilitators, may take this class to satisfy 8 hours of Continuing Education. However, this course may only be used for Continuing Education credit everyother year (not every year).
